Mentoring a Consumerist Generation

QUOTE: "We've got to help them. We’ve got to love them, we’ve got to listen to them, but also we’ve got to find ways of gently, lovingly but definitely challenging some of the things that come from a culture of consumerism, individualism and entitlement.” —Mike Pilavachi, founder and international director of Soul Survivor Ministries, responding to the results from a survey of 18- to 30-year-olds that revealed how the so-called "missing generation" relates to church. According to more than 800 young believers, the most important element that attracts them to a church is the resources offered to help them in their personal faith. Second on the list was "excellent worship," while the elements least likely to attract them to a church were being mission-minded and being a safe place to invite friends. Pilavachi believes the poll reveals a culture of consumerism, individualism and entitlement had “eaten into the psyche of 20-somethings. What that mitigates against completely is commitment to community." [au.christiantoday.com, 9/22/09]
