Culture Clash

After experiencing the Lakeland Outpouring in person for the first time earlier this week, I returned home feeling like I’d just swum in a pool filled with oil and water. Every move of God involves a clash of elements: sin vs. salvation, flesh vs. spirit, pride vs. repentance … the list goes on. Yet I believe God’s current movement in Lakeland is exposing the mixed elements that have comprised the charismatic church culture for at least a generation now. The good news? Something’s gotta give. And my hope is that, like water yielding to oil, we’re the ones who make room for God.

Monday night’s apostolic commissioning of evangelist Todd Bentley began with the ceremony’s organizer, Peter Wagner, calling it “an event [that] could well have historic implications not only for the Lakeland Outpouring, but also for our nation and for many other nations of the world.” Those opening remarks set the stage for what simultaneously became an admirable display of ministerial government and a nauseating example of what’s wrong with our movement today.

One minute we were being reminded—as has been the case throughout the Outpouring—that this was all about God’s glory, that it had little to do with Todd Bentley. The next, Bentley was announcing to GOD TV viewers and those among the crowd of 10,000 what cities Todd Bentley would be visiting and what stadiums Todd Bentley would be filling in the months to come. One moment the emphasis was being placed on how revival fires would spread through average, uncommissioned Joes; the next moment, we were presumptuously instructed to “hold our applause until the end” of Wagner’s roll call of the big names in attendance.

I, like most people, am all for God showing up through unconventional means. I love it when He surprises some of us and offends the rest by using the underdogs, the oft-forgottens, the unimpressive and the downright weird among us. It comes as no surprise to me that God might use a sold-out, tattooed, pierced 30-something to stir hunger among His people. And above all the distractions, criticism and controversy surrounding the Lakeland Outpouring, this is clear: God’s people are hungry. Starving, to be exact. We are all—leaders included—desperate for God’s glory to change this earth and bring His kingdom. That, along with such elements as repentance and holiness, lays the foundation for true revival.

But I wonder how firm our foundation currently is given the celebrity-centric ministry culture we’ve created. We cry out for a move of God that’s pronounced through nameless, faceless people, yet we’re all too often reminded of who’s sitting on stage, who’s in the building, who’s holding the microphone, who’s attending what conference, who’s leading worship, who’s prophesying at the church across town …

Is anyone else seeing a culture clash here?

There are obviously other issues—from extra-biblical theology to extreme manifestations to teachings on angels—that have turned the Lakeland Outpouring into such a divisive move. But I believe underneath these fundamental yet surface issues lies a cultural war that is apparent not just every night at the “revival tent” in Lakeland, but also in Spirit-filled churches across our nation. God is looking to promote His kingdom culture, and we keep diluting it with ours.

What’s exciting is that we are all in this together. Ché Ahn, who helped preside over Bentley’s commissioning, spoke the following night in Bentley’s absence and at times gave a beautiful example of what great leadership can look like in these messy times. At the point where most well-known ministers would begin to inadvertently “hog the mic” as they lay hands on the sick and keep all eyes on them, Ahn followed what I believe is God’s underlying desire: letting the saints do His business. Not an elite few or just those who have obvious giftings, mind you. “This is the day of the saints,” Ahn said as he led almost 10,000 “average Joes” to lay hands on the sick among them and pray for each other. “This is something for all of us to do. … Not all of us have the gift of healing, but all of us have the responsibility or the role to heal the sick. … We all carry the anointing!”

I refuse to be an armchair quarterback of what’s going on at Lakeland, or of any of the leaders involved, for that matter. I am just as at fault for creating this culture as the next person—and that includes the honorable and gifted “names” that I’m targeting here. Again, we all want the same thing. We all want to see God changing lives, communities, cities, nations. We want to see the day when the “glory of God fills the whole earth” (Num. 14:20).

But like the Israelites wandering in Sinai, we can either make another trip around the mountain, or we can change and enter into the promised land of true revival. We can learn from past mistakes and fizzled revivals and be truly saturated with the Holy Spirit, or we can remain a diluted mixture of flesh and spirit. We can continue to shine the spotlight (even unintentionally) on ourselves, or we can truly follow Jesus’ example and become servant leaders who have no problem stepping aside as the Lord walks into the room. It’s God’s culture or our own.

QUOTE: "God is looking to promote His kingdom culture, and we keep diluting it with ours."

- agreed, amen to that.

After I heard and read many of the critical comments about the Lakeland revival and Todd Bentley, I decided that although I could not be there physically, I will check it out on the web. As I did, I became very thankful to G_d for allowing me to enjoy what I perceived to be a great-spiritual event. However, like many others, I again noticed what I had on other occassions while watching Todd's programs. That is, the exact diluted mixture that you speak of in your article. I have and am praying for revival in the assembly of believers, that it may move the world to repentance, while we remain humble before the Master. So it is my prayer that we may be given a heart that is humble enough to look to the Father's love, while we love and watch for one another.

stop the balony. false prophest all around, false claims of healing, this is a joke and the worl is laughing

I had the opportunity to attend the meetings too and I completely agree with this post. There is definitely a healthy dose of fleshly activity in the mix. I pray that as this movement continues, the leaders will yield more and more to what God wants to do. At the end of the day, it will not be numbers in a stadium that impress God. It will be saved souls and a changed world.

The problem with the church is reflected in the supposed ordination of a false prophet/evangelist, whatever self proclaimed title he holds, by false prophets, pastors and apostles who are demon lead. Why are the leaders so concerned with gathering medical records to "prove" the "healings" are genuine? Just produce testimony and results of amputees limbs being restored, eyes replaced and severe burn victims healed! The apostate church has left its first love and is chasing after lying signs and wonders which in itself is a sign of the last days. GET BACK TO THE BIBLE LAZY CHRISTIANS and test the spirit to see if it is of God! You will find this phoney balony revival is of God, but not as you suppose! Jesus warned us "Do not be deceived" and the apostle Paul declares in 2Th2:10-11"... because they received not the love of the truth...God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:...". The "they" folks are "christians"! Don't look to corrupt men to validate this revival, but God!

Thanks for a blog post well said. Every time I watch the revival from my home in El Salvador I get touched by the presence of God. There are moments where the worship is so intense, and the worship leaders step aside and let the Holy Spirit move through the people spontaneously. I love that. Then there are moments where people are pushed down. That's not just Todd, that's an accepted practice in most charismatic ministry, as it's all about the body count. But there really is a baby in this bath water, and I agree with you in the hope that as it progresses all the charismatic celebrity worship and hoopla will become more and more repulsive to those leading the revival. As that garbage gets left behind something pure and holy will be revealed I believe.

when we see all the false doctrines that are being taught by Bentley and other false teachers it is a shame that people don't know the bible and are being tricked by these people.Bentley says God told him to kick a women in the face, and we know that's not true because the bible say to lay hands suddenly on no man.So who are you gona believe him or the word of God?He teaches about gold dust and angel feathers and all the new stuff God is doing, and again we know that is false doctrine because the word says Jesus Christ the same yesterday, today and forever he does not change ,so if when paul preached and nobody had teeth turn to gold you can be sure that it is not happening now, what happened in the early church is what still happens now!!!!He has not change ,we have because we are always looking for something new or better and never happy with what we already have .Jesus did not teach that we would or even should be rich like alot of these false teachers,Jesus said that we should be content with such things as we have,WOW!!!! that sure is not what some these men teach! The bottom line is we need to get back to the bible and learn what it says and it would be far harder for these false teachers like Bentley,Hinn,Meyers,Copeland, and many others that are of the cultic word of faith movement. We don't need gold dust or angels,we need JESUS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Marcus, thank you for your obedience to God which is reflected in your commentary. I can see that you sought God before you wrote your piece. Todd Bentley just asked CNN where is, and he also just said he is waiting for Oprah to show up.
Why? Does CNN, Nightline, or Oprah all posses Godly wisdom that defines a genuine move of God?
May God have mercy on us for seeking idols.

Mixed blessing! This has been the history of the Church through the ages. It's very sad. I don't believe God gave us Jesus for this purpose, it's what we have done with the message and with the gifts of the Spirit that brings reproach to the Lord.

It deeply saddens me when, in prayer, we invite the Holt Spirit to come and dwell amongst us...only to send Him away when the pastor, priest or leader wants his message, sermon or words to get heard. In God's Word, He says, 'Come to me with thanksgiving and Praise," but we tend to bring Him our complaints first, our shopping list second, our structure third, and lastly His Well deserved Praise.
Lord, I am so, so, sorry for man being man. I thank you that You are God of the Impossible, i thank YOu that You allow is to strengthen the numbers in Your Kingdom, with every new day that You alone allow with the break of dawn. i thank You that You alone are the HOPE of the world, despite the pride and arrogance of mankind.
only You are Worthy.

Excuse me, I have read many solid criticisms of this revival from Charisma writers, but this one seems absurd! Because the apostles present at Bentley's commissioning were honored with applause does not mean that humility was compromised. Neither does the fact that Todd shared his upcoming itinerary with the crowd. Are we to have no leadership anymore simply because God has anointed us all to do the work of ministry? Cannot God still raise up people to lead movements, like He did Moses in the Old Testament and men like John the Baptist, Christ, and Paul in the New?

It is very possible to recognize the unique blessing on the ministries of Todd Bentley, Che Ahn, and others - and still expect to see the Holy Spirit move powerfully through every individual. We can not just act like there is no importance to having these leaders with us, especially since they are the ones training us to heal the sick, preach the Gospel, and prophesy on the streets. Let us give honor where honor is due (Romans 13:7).

Who cares what everyone judges. Let God be true. His purposes will prevail. don't throw the baby out with the bath water.

thx for saying (blogging) what many of us are thinking about the celebrity cults that abound in America's charismatic movement.
your boldness and balance is appreciated.

Through the years my husband and I have laid down a spiritual ruler to measure and discern. It goes like this: If you can't preach it or present it in Africa, then it can't be of God.

We used it years ago to dismiss the "name it and claim it" theology as being man-made, as well as the prosperity movement, (Jesus went to the cross so we could all become financially rich), and many other crazy doctrines and practices. Now according to Charisma magazine, Steven Strang, GodTV, etc., we are to accept a tattooed shaven-headed man with piercings who barks like a dog, shakes his head continuously in some kind of frenzy, speaks of his "visitations" every night in his hotel room, (I could go on), and we are to believe that he is the greatest new apostle since Steven was stoned. Give me a break.

I listen to the things people say who have come back from the meetings in Lakeland and have watched a few times on GodTV and I cannot believe what I am seeing and hearing.

The sad thing is that there are so many young people who are accepting this thing as real and from the Lord. They are unlearned and do not seem to know what is true and right.

The other night when the man appointed so-called Apostles supposedly authorized Todd Bently, I saw my old pastor from 30 years ago standing there. He looked like he had lost his senses, and yet at the same time, his expression made me wonder if he wasn't thinking to himself, "these people are crazy." That man at one time could quote the Bible, almost full chapters at a time. He fell away from preaching the pure and simple Gospel some years ago, and started another revival in Lakeland with Rodney Howard Browne. This present revival isn't the first false one the Straders have begun and brought to that city! People were messed up from that one, now others will be messed up from this one. It sure brings in a crowd and a lot of revenue though!

Saints, you don't have to accept this baloney. Sure, we're all hungry for God - but when you want a steak, cake icing isn't going to fill you or to make you healthy. The scripture says 'draw nigh to God and He will draw nigh to you,'James 4:8. That's how you do it - through prayer, Bible study, praise and worship and fellowship with saints in a meeting that's in order according to I Corinthians 14:26-33. Let the fire of the Holy Spirit fall, but the way it did in the early church. We don't need or want strange fire.

And no - where we minister in Africa, they would never accept this evangelist or this 'revival' as being from God. They would say Bentley is a spiritualist and they would fear that his 'power' is demonic. They are rather expert in those things and they know the difference.

Marcus, you write:
"We can learn from past mistakes and fizzled revivals and be truly saturated with the Holy Spirit, or we can remain a diluted mixture of flesh and spirit."

However, as humans, we will always be a mixture of flesh and spirit. To suggest otherwise is simply promoting gnosticism.

I think we all need to meditate on 1 Cor 13 and ask The Lord Jesus to fill us with this(HIS) kind of love and pray for Todd Bentley. You have to admit whether you like it or not people are experiencing revival and renewed passion, I know many personally and I am one of them. Sure there may be some questionable manifesttions. Todd is a young passionate guy who loves the Lord who has the boldness to step out where others refuse to. I believe we all need to step out of our comfort zones of religion and have the same boldness to tell others about our Saviour. When the world sees us shooting our own that also discredits our message. Pray for Todd. Love him as a brother in Christ. He needs it- I need it as we all do.

When one does work in God's name, and has some position associated with that work, the trust that is placed in that individual is at times unbelievable, and very scary. I found this to be true when I began working as a chaplain over a decade ago, and I am constantly reminded it of it today.

Because my work has been very much with people sexually abused as a result of religious figures in residential schools abusing their positions of trust, it was clear to me from the get-go just how fragile and valuable trust is for any of us who wish to serve Christ.

My sense, reflecting the experiences associated with my work, is that as the trust in us increases, and the Lord allows us to do more, the greater the temptation the enemy may place upon us, the higher there is for us to fall.

I am not judging anyone. I am simply saying that in God's work people's trust must be regarded as sacred, and not to be messed with in any way. The more it is "me" and not "Him in me who is mightier than he that is in the world," there is risk. I cannot begin to imagine the degree of temptation or risk that faces one who ministers from the seeming pedestals on which we place some of our spiritual leaders. My prayer is that they be fully protected by God's grace, and that the enemy be bound in Jesus' name so they do nothing that may harm others or take away from the Holy Spirit's work.

Little wonder the world ignores and disrespects Jesus -look at the example some of us are showing them with cruel judgmental comments all over the internet about Todd Bentley. Jesus said people would know we are His because we love one another. This has not been demonstrated toward Todd Bentley. Non-Christians can be excused because they do not have the discernment Christians have to determine what is of God and what is not - through the Holy Spirit -not temperal judgment of the flesh.

400,000 people have attended the Lakeland Revival according to news articles - are some calling those sisters and brothers in Christ all fools as some have blogged? Once again, we are known by how we treat and speak of our fellow Chrisitans.

Every denomination thinks that others are of the devil or have made serious doctinal errors so Todd Bentley isn't their first to be attacked by his fellow Christians.

Because Todd Bentley has a world wide forum to speak of God, let's get on our knees and pray for him and the revival. Ask that the hundreds of thousands brought into the Kindgom will increase to millions saved. That is our commission from Jesus.

Let's keep our eyes on the goal of salvation for the lost Jesus died for and demonstrate His love through love for one another.

You do realize do you not that the glory of the Lord that filled the whole earth was one of wrath???
He was completely and totally annoyed with the children of Israel and the proceeding scriptures tell exactly what He is going to do to them in judgement.

I agree that God more than likely is not going to wait long to let us know His true views on the subject of Lakeland and the scripture referenced is right on the mark. However I think you think the scripture is a good thing, it's a glory of the Lord that few people ever want to see. God weighing in on the matter.

Another scripture comes to mind the place I can't remember but it goes something like this... just because I haven't said or done anything about it doesn't mean that I won't. Judgement day is coming.

I am tired of the term false prophets, there are those that
are so critical and judgemental,
and jealous and envious that they are so blinded to the point where they can't discern a move of God, and the true false prophets are not being revealed or exposed. They think very highly and laugh and talk with the true false, how sad. if we truly began to get a true relationship with God and open up our spirit to him, then we will began to be able to see what or who is real and who is false.
God is using this man because he has empowered him to be able to take all of your fault finding, and to exposed your religious spirit and all tha's in you.
It's to much jealous and envy in the body of Christ, It is not about us People, It is truly about
the Lord, Thank the Lord.

I guarantee a number of "prophets" are diluting Christianity and the body of Christ with their antics regarding, but not limited to - prancing around "in the spirit"; when they touch people on the forehead, the person always falls backward where the handlers can catch them; they have a direct line to God, where God told them... .

Where in the bible does Jesus touch someone to heal them and he/she is thrown backward. Where are he and/or the disciples drunk in the spirit or dancing around on a stage? Theatrics!!

You so-called prophets are a laughingstock to otherwise conservative Christians. By whose standard are you a prophet or bishop or whatever other name you want to call yourself?

You take yourself way too seriously!
