Was It Just Another Event?
Whenever you're part of a life-shaping experience like this past weekend's TheCall, one of the biggest challenges is the postlude. It's easy to thrive on the prelude—the expectation, passion and prayer that naturally builds as the "date" gets closer. Yet the follow-through is just as crucial. Let the experience be driven by emotion and zeal, and you're sure to see it fizzle out with little, if any, lasting fruit. It becomes an event rather than an ongoing experience. For permanent changes to take place, we need that precious combination of divine calling, Spirit-guided perseverence, hands-to-the-plow action and self-discipline.
Given that, I think it's fitting that I share with you the first part of one youth minister's letter written for our magazine. This wasn't penned with TheCall in mind, nor is it necessarily about what TheCall stood for or attempted to accomplish. Yet TheCall is one of the many uprisings in this country recognizing God's movement among the younger generations. And that is what this youth minister, Josh Radford, is passionate about. I'll be posting the rest of Josh's words in bite-size pieces over the next few days, but I thought this was pertinent for all of us today—whether we were part of TheCall or not—who desire to see a shift in our nation, particularly among the younger generations.
YOUR TURN: In your opinion, are youth ministries really ignoring the Holy Spirit? If so, why—and what can church leaders do about it? If not, why do you think we've yet to see a full revival among youth? (And if you attended TheCall, we'd love to hear your post-7/7/07 thoughts as well.)

In my years in youth ministry there has been one common thread among young people that’s lead to supernatural growth and a radical commitment to God: the power of the Holy Spirit. This is not a new revelation or trend. This is how God intended all youth ministries to be from the beginning.
I’ve seen youth ministry in charismatic circles move away from this proven strategy to touch this generation, and I wonder why. Why would we give up on the mighty person of the Holy Spirit? Why would we even think of putting Him on the backburner? Is it to be “seeker-sensitive” or to not offend people? If we really want to be seeker-sensitive, the Holy Spirit needs to be the main focus because He draws people to Jesus. Maybe we do not make Him central to our ministries because we have lost our focus and become religious in our charismatic experience. Maybe we’ve filled our heads with so many ideas on life that we no longer believe the Holy Spirit’s touch in someone’s life will actually change them.
The most important thing after salvation is being filled with the Holy Spirit. Yet when was the last time you heard a youth message or teaching series on the infilling of the Holy Spirit, praying in tongues or signs and wonders? Does this mean nobody is preaching about the Holy Spirit? Obviously not. There are youth ministries today that are led by great men and women of God who are teaching our young people how to live a powerful Spirit-filled life. But there are not enough of these ministers.
I have made it my quest to have the person of the Holy Spirit take center stage in youth ministry in America. I am calling on youth ministers from all over to join in this quest. This is the only way to impact this generation and see our country turn to God.

This article was awesome! This is the kind of stuff that needs to be said. I'm Glad someone is exposing the truth!
I agree with it. I think it should be taught in the youth. Because it's a way that we can build a stronger relationship with God. It's what keeps your fire burning. The Holy Ghost is apart of the three God heads, so if we learn about Jesus and God why not the Holy Ghost?! I'm glad that someone is coming out and saying what needs to be said and put into the youth!
Praise God!!! It's about time the Holy Ghost is getting exposure! Our youth NEED the Fire of God...the baptism of the Holy Ghost and Fire, just like John the Baptist said. Many people with good intentions are trying to get our youth to "acquire" it, but it will just fizzle out if the Holy Spirit "gasoline" isn't a part of it to continually fuel that fire!
It's time to get back to the Acts 2 Church...we need another Pentecost! Send Your wind, send Your rain, and Lord, send Your Holy Ghost FIRE!
It's time to get back to the Acts 2 Church...we need another Pentecost! Send Your wind, send Your rain, and Lord, send Your Holy Ghost FIRE!
This is so true. The young people today need to know that the power of God is still moving in our midst. I'm glad to see that there is someone willing to speak out about it like the Pastor who wrote the article.
That's right! We were designed to live with the same Holy Spirit that Jesus had when he walked this earth! It's time to get hungry and receive what has already been made available to us!
Evidently, God in these last days is bringing us full circle. We began this country on the premise that 'In God We Trust'[ed]. The Lord said to his disciples, and by extension to us, that He is not leaving us alone, but rather He leaves us with One who sticks closer than a brother. God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit are one. As we trust in His Holy Spirit, we trust in Him. The need I see being met here, is we tend to go with cliches like let the 'fire' of the Holy Spirit 'touch' you. I see Pastor Josh as one who by the Holy Spirit, provides the insightful application on just how that can work for us in our daily lives. As the next generation is stirred, so the 'older' generation, as well as the next generation, will also be stirred; and so, we come full circle, beginning with Him, and fulfilling our lives through Him, until we return to Him.

I have been on several missions trips and the trips where the Holy Spirit was shared with the students, those students were forever changed. The students and leadership that shunned the Holy Spirit were religious dead heads, who had no idea how to love on the people around them or even see them get saved. The Holy Spirit is needed for this generation to stay away from the pulls of the world. Fire in their belly for the things of God will fill any temptation to go after anything else. I have seen for myself what will happen to a young person who does not know about the power behind the Holy Spirit.
I think all of these major 'youth events' are nice and all but there has always been something missing. I was so tired as a youth, going to and from these retreats and seeing my generation have a weekend touch and that being the end of it. WE MUST HAVE A HOLY GHOST LIFE CHANGING EXPERIENCE! We have to come to the understanding of the Holy Ghost's position in our lives. just imagine if at these 'events' of 2,000 30,000 and 75,000 christians getting together caught a hold of the FIRE OF GOD~~~~The ENTIRE region would be shaken by a radical generation who's only passion is Jesus and seeing their generation as a harvest feild. Just Imagine!!!!! Catch a hold of this guys....The Fire of GOd IS our calling!
I beleive God is calling this generation to manifest the kingdom of heaven through signs, wonders and miracles on their campuses and the places they socialize. But that only comes when they are filled with the Holy Spirit and power, which is birthed out of intimacy and fellowship with our Heavenly Father. Its time for youth groups to start focusing on imparting the kingdom of God in the hearts of young people instead of cool programs that bring temporary hype that makes their walk with God stagnant.
The Holyspirit is very much needed in this generation & in all generations!Having a meeting without Him is like visiting a restaurant that has no food!It is impossible to penetrate the hearts of young people or anyone without His touch, without His Fire.Through the touch comes a life changing experience but through that experience comes a total transformation that will continue to fuel us to go to the next level, making us hungrier for more of Him bringing us to that place where we are never satisfied and continue to desire more of all He has for you.Moving from glory to glory through a intimate relationship with Him!To walk in the supernatural realm,to walk in the gifts of the spirit & be totally led by Him in all that we do & every direction that we take in our lives. The Holyspirit is crucial & a vital necessity that we need if we are going to help transform this generation to shake the nations. We have been appointed & annointed & equipped....appointed by God the Father, annointed by Jesus the Son,& equipped with the Holyspirit to seek & save that which is lost at any cost!
I believe most of the gospel and sound theology is being ignored by many youth ministries. Most youth pastors that I personally know are very shallow spiritually. Their prayer lives and their own study of the Word is not to be desired. Further, while many youth pastors may want to teach on the basic truths of Scripture many perhaps are swept into the church growth movement rather than building strong disciples of Jesus.
I agree with Pastor Josh. Although some youth ministries teach about the power of the Holy Spirit, they tend to just keep His activity with signs and wonders to the apostles in scripture and shy away from creating an atmosphere where the Holy Spirit can take control and move in signs and wonders because it means being vulnerable and taking the lid off the time and entertainment filled container that we put Him into. Young people, our adults, and our churches need the power of the Holy Spirit. Let us unite in accord.
well as a young person who has knows Josh Radford and his wife Lori personally I would have to sat that i totally agree with what he saying. with the time that I spent sitting under Pastor Josh as a youth leader there was one very important thing that i learned and that was, that we have to get the power of the Holy Ghost back into Youth Groups like never before! This up and coming generation needs the Holy Spirit like never before! I know that in my own life i wouldn't be were i am now with out Him! We need to get rid of those petty pizza parties and things of the sort and start preaching the real message of God to these young people. the teens of today aren't seeking for pizza parties and a nice "christian" place to hang out at, they're searching for something to take the pain away that they feel everyday! WE NEED TO PREACH THE HOLY GHOST AND POWER! WE NEED TO BREAK OPEN HEARTS OF THOSE THAT ARE HURTING AND I KNOW THAT I WON'T STOP UNTIL IT'S PREACHED IN EVERY YOUTH GROUP AROUND THE WORLD!!!
The Holy Spirit is a comforter, Aloes Pericletus, as in the greek description, Aloes from the plant, which has simularities to our skin, it's healing powers that match our very own flesh, pericletus (hope my spelling is right) from the word periclete, or helper. Jesus spoke solely of the holy spirit as a comforter, to help us baptized in this spirit until his return. One cannot claim to know comfort with out the holy spirit. I have personally seen the change in my life from my own disregard of sin to a consistent battle between my conscious mind and the spirit when it comes to sin. Many of our youth today are on a search for identity which comes from purpose. Without the holy spirit, you cannot know purpose. Acts 1:8 But Ye Shall Receive Power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jurasalem and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost parts of the Earth. You shall receive power. You. Not Him, not her, You. Many Churches glance overthis passage and spend time teaching messages that leave the youth feeling empty and unfullfilled. It is time to allow the Holy Spirit to be the Holy Spirit. Baptize them and let the Holy Spirit do the job. I have seen alot of churches that wouldn't even teach these things beginning to teach them, I feel the lines between denominal Christian beliefs is giving way to a unified body. We must let the youth lead the churches into this true direction. They are the future Pastor's and World Shakers. I hope that more churches embrace this all important belief. Josh You are awesome! Love ya Bro'

I totally agree with this. How could we forget about the Holy Spirit?? -He's the comforter! Pastor Josh is doing a great job in speaking up about this. :]
I agree one hundred percent! There are definatly not enough youth leaders and ministers teaching on the subject of the Holy Spirit and the power of God! Theres a real enemy out there whose only goal is to kill, steal and destroy the lives of teenagers and it's only getting worse! Theres only one hope for this generation to have revival and be snatched out of the jaws of hell! Religion and orginized programs wont cut it! And if this whole "seeker sensitive, Meet the Holy Spirit in the back room" doctrines really worked, we would not be seeing so many of our young people backsliding and cooling off in their relationship with Jesus and turning to the things of this world to find fullfillment and joy! Drugs, alcohol and all these other things are only a cheep conterfiet to the real power of the Holy Spirit! The only way to see this generation saved is to be relentless, bold, unashamed of the power of God and the mighty person of the Holy Spirit! Thats the only hope we have! The enemy is not being seeker sensitive about taking out our young people so even more so we need to not be seeker senstive about the one and only thing that will keep our youth off the path headed straight for hell! We as youth leaders and Youth Pastors need to step up to the plate and be bold about the things of God and shoot religion and the doctrines of men in the head once and for all! I thank God for every Youth Pastor that is carrying this torch and speaking up about this subject because it needs to be addressed and its been long over due!
I Am So thankful to Youth Pastors all around who are willing to stand up for letting the Holy Spirit completely take over! I, as a youth am constantly seeking after the Lord and praying for his Holy Spirit to touch the Youth of this nation and I am VERY encouraged when MY Youth Pastor is not only Talking the Talk, but Also Walking the walk! Without the Holy Spirit, there is no power. All I can say is LORD LET YOUR FIRE FALL, LET THE WIND BLOW, AND LET YOUR GLORY COME DOWN! ><>
We ask ourselves "How to save a Life"? Preach the truth (The Blood of Jesus) and proclaim the Power of the Holy Spirit to our youth.
Pastor Josh is right on. If we want to reach the lost and keep the fire burning in our youth and us adults. There will only be one way to do it and that is through the FIRE of of the Holy Spirit. E.O.

young people are attracted to what is real. the world is full of what is not true.the presence of god changes us from the in side out. pastor josh is dead on. the holy ghost is the difference frome the same old youth service.Jesus promised in luke 24:49 that he was going to send what the father had promised. this is what this youth pastor is talkin about!
Traveling to different Youth Groups you know by their fruit that the Holy Spirit isn't taught, demonstrated or even present in some cases.
Rather then following a Church Service format, church leaders can allow the Holy Spirit to move, breathe, speak and touch in ways that He alone can. Time in praise, worship and prayer ushers in the anointing of the Holy Spirit. We will get to a place of hunger and thirst for righteousness, to know Him and the power of His resurrection. We will need Him, pursue Him, desire Him, love Him and please Him; having an intimate relationship/fellowship with Him.
Knowing and speaking the Bible (the Word) doesn't complete our relationship. We must be baptized in the name of the Father and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost and with fire; being filled with His power to be witnesses and demonstrators, speaking boldly. We may just be the only "Jesus" our neighbors and family members will ever see. Jesus seeks to save, to deliver, to heal, to make free; we are commissioned to do likewise.

I agree with Pastor Josh Radford completely. Pastor Josh has a heart and passion for our youth. I would love to hear more of what he has to say. I feel our youth need to know and experience the Holy Spirit for themselves.
Yes, I think many Youth Groups are too focused on growing their congregation rather than getting kids to come so they can fulfill the call of God on their lives. How is that even possible w/out the help of The Holy Spirit. He is the one who has the power to mold people into the image of Jesus Christ; it certainly isn't another rally to raise money with carwashes and bakesales.
If you are a youth leader and you've found yourself in this situation and you want the Holy Spirit to be at your youth services; ask Him to show up. Expect the unexpected, read the book of Acts, and get under someone's ministry that welcomes The Holy Spirit.

A church without the Holy Spirit isnt really a church! It just becomes another place of fellowship. A youth group without the Holy Spirit, just becomes another dry and barren land. The Holy Spirit is a gentlemen, and he will not enter, where he's not welcomed. In order to see America come back to God, the Holy Spirit must be present at all times. If not then she'll become another grave yard!
Young people need the Holy Spirt because He is the comforter and the guide. Youth is a critical time in life where you need guidence in who you are, where you are going, what career path to choose, and so many other important decisions which will affect the rest of your life. Comfort is also needed as relationships form and break up, young love is very unbalanced, and can lead one to make mistakes that they regret later. Yes, I love this article it is a timely word from God for today.
This article exposes the raw truth that many are unwilling to face. There is an extreme difference in the youth group that is set ablaze by the fire of the Holy Spirit and the youth group that treats the Holy Spirit as a side dish. The Holy Spirit is not an "IT" and He is not something we "do" like an extra-curricular activity. He is a Person and we are to become who He is. He is our lifestyle and when our generation grabs a hold of this, it will be evident because this encounter will be busting out of the four walls of the church into the highways and byways! We must not draw our influence or our standard from the world. We must not conform to what they think is acceptable. We are the influencers who change the world. Let not the potential of the Holy Spirit inside of us be wasted another day! Lets rise up!
FOR THE YOUTH TO KNOW ,FEEL ,AND SEE WHAT GOD CAN REALLY DO IN THE PHYSICAL AND SPIRITUAL REALM YOU WOULD NEED TO HAVE THE HOLY SPIRIT.ALSO I AM A MINISTER OF THE GOSPEL AND FOR ME I FEEL TO IMPACT THE NEXT GENERATION AND TO IMPACT A DYING COLD WORLD YOU WOULD NEED THE FIRE (HOLY SPIRIT) ISAIAH 32:16 FOR EXAMPLE. ISAIAH SAYS THAT THE HOLY SPIRIT BRINGS THE WORD OF JUDGEMENT AGAINST SIN. AND THAT MESSAGE PRODUCES RIGHTEOUSNESS IN THE PEOPLE. THE VERSE SPEAKS FOR ITSELF. THE TIME IS NOW AND THE YOUTH IS CRYING OUT. THATS WHY WE NEED THE FIRE OF THE HOLY GHOST TO BE TAUGHT TO THE YOUTH FROM THERE TO THE WORLD!!!!!!!!!!!
I agree with this article to a certain extent. Yes, to be filled with the Holy Spirit is a must after salvation because it empowers us to serve Him on this earth; however, there are too many Christians focusing on "thrills" and the manifestation of the Holy Spirit (I myself was one) versus the consistent passion to serve our Lord and to know His Word. We must worship in spirit AND in truth. One without the other is a recipe for disaster. All truth and no spirit ends up in religion. All spirit and no truth ends up in deception. What happens when the thrills, goose bumps and manifestations are gone? Do we have enough passion in Christ alone? We must stand on a foundation that cannot be shaken or imitated for that manner. There are a lot of so called Spirit-filled services which are simply counterfeit. The enemy is much too clever at this. Yes, we need more of the Holy Spirit for ourselves and our youth, but we also need to instill in them a hunger for God's Word and for serving our Lord even when all else is absent. In the end, all these things will pass away--the gifts that is, but the Word of God shall stand forever. Isaiah 40:8 Too many churches have fallen into false doctrines these days due to this craving for manifestation. We must be careful that our idol has not become what the Holy Spirit can do versus Who the Holy Spirit is. If tongues and prophecy would cease tomorrow, would you still serve Him with unrelentless passion? Where is the passion coming from and what is feeding it is the question we must ask ourselves? Just another powerful service is not enough because then we will need more of the same to keep us going. What if He sends us to a remote part of the world, with no youth conference, no so called revival and no manifestations of His power? What if we are in a hospital or bedridden for a season? What happens then? That is why the love of many grows cold. Our passion must come from Christ alone--on Who He is not what He does.
