Name That Demon
This was not a complete surprise for me since, before the "exorcism", the speaker had explained the spiritual significance of the python. Apparently, the word python comes from the Greek word puthon, a spirit of divination that Paul cast out of a woman in Acts 16:16 and the name of a serpentine dragon that guarded the oracle of Delphi. Leviathan, on the other hand, is the beast that God challenges Job to drag out of the sea with a hook. Although extinct, it now apparently inhabits the bodies of 30-something men.
Anyhow, the incident got me thinking about "naming the spirits" and whether it's a legitimate practice. I've heard supporters make reference to the demon in Mark 8:31, who identified himself to Jesus as "legion." Others say that "legion" was not the demon's name, but merely an acknowledgment that there were so many spirits inhabiting the man that it would take too long for them to all state their names. I've heard some proponents identify evil spirits with the names of Old Testament villains such as Jezebel. Others connect spirits with diseases, mental illnesses or specific sins such as anger or incest.
From the maniacal hatred of Adolf Hitler to the murderous destruction of the Ebola virus, some behaviors, illnesses and even governments can take on a supernatural and otherworldly element that we can only attribute to the god of this world. Truth be told, "the spirit of ____" appears throughout Scripture in reference to dizziness, despair, a destroyer, prostitution, impurity, stupor, timidity, antichrist and falsehood. However (with a few exceptions), these instances seem to be identifying a general attitude or influence affecting a group of people rather than a personal entity inhabiting an individual.
We Westerners are often too quick to find natural explanations for supernatural occurrences, but shouldn't we guard against the other extreme--creating an elitist or "specialist" view of encountering the spirit world? I've heard some argue that if you can't identify the demon, you can't cast it out ... that one must understand the intricate hierarchy and structure of the spirit world in order to command its minions.
Thankfully, for those of us confused by such daunting prospects, the only "skill" Jesus ever identifies as being profitable for expelling demons is prayer and fasting.

>>INTERACT: Do you believe one must identify the names of evil spirits before he or she can cast them out? Weigh in with your responses below.
I have seen very positive results from deliverances. I have also seen the... well, what we might call "absurd."
Thanks for keeping us aware of the extremes associated with deliverance, as well as keeping us aware of the reality.
After being in Pentecostal/Charasmatic circles for over forty-five years and a Spirit-filled pastor's wife for over twenty-five, I appreciated so much your article. May we never be delivered from the spirit of "BALANCE." Of course, we know that the powers of Hell are real, but so are the powers of Heaven. It seems in the Spirit-filled circles the old saying is true - the brightest light attracts the biggest bugs. May the Pentecostal message burn brighter in these last days without the extremes. God bless you for your spiritual discernment.
Great article! I was just telling someone today that I was overburdened by many charismatic concepts that have been taken too far. My inclination is to hide my head in the sand and act like those things are not real, but that is the pendulum swinging to the other side. You tackled this with balance. Thanks for the insights.
I don't really think there's an answer one way or another. I do believe that the Holy Spirit is capable of allowing us to recognize certain spirits but that each case is individual. If He prompts you to ask the name, you should certainly do it. If not, and you are aware of demonic presence, then use what revelation and knowledge He gives at the time. If we get into the absolute right and wrong ways to accomplish God's purposes, we are once again falling prey to legalism. The Spirit moves where it will. Our only job is to follow!
Note how the spirit of deception worked in Hitler and was transferred to the entire country.
What about the spirit of terrorism today. This spirit combines with the spirit of deception, murder, religion, hate and more. The spirit of antichrist is at least the spirit of anti- Christian and anti-semitism. The list goes on and on.
Great article!
I loved what Dixieland57 said, about the brightest lights attracting the biggest bugs, too :)
How true, how true.
These things take our focus off 1) God and 2) His desire to demonstrate His love and desire to free people from the enemy's torment. The Spirit may or may not provide a name. However, discerning the presence of an evil spirit, and getting the person to agree that they want it gone, are far more important than learning spirit names, which -- as someone else pointed out -- could be lies anyway.
a woman stepped out in front of us. It was apparent she was demonized. The Indian Pastor who was hosting us, stepped out of the vehicle. Went over to the lady and spoke in Tamil. Suddenly the woman dropped to her knees weeping. Her countenance was totally different. After returning to our vehicle I ask the Pastor if he had to call the demon by its name. I will never forget his response which was, " I don't care what his name is, It must bow and obey at the name of Jesus." AMEN! That settled it for me
Why then do we even listen to ministries that represent Him as such?
His ways are above ours, and He oftentimes rocks our boat when He intervenes miraculously but He doesn't come across as a wide-eyed wierdo ever. Perhaps I'm just being influenced by the spirit of _________ or something... Dave
In one situation, I was ministering to a women's daughter, who had been raped and actually had a demon transfered to her from the rape.
As I ministered to her daughter, I notice her mother also reacting to my prayers and deliverence for her daughter. The same "uncle" had raped them both.
Needless to say I was doing 2 exorcisms at the same time and thank God for his autority over the demons.
Mother and daughter are doing well.
Deliverence is a reality we must face both for Christians and non-Christians.
Demons do not have names because they don't have and were not given the natural ability to create a name for themselves or anything. So whoever says he knows a demon's name is just creating a name and giving the demon more room to stay where they should not play, and demons know that they can only vacate a place if a more higher authority comes in, which is the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Do all things (including casting out demons) ONLY in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.
But again, if you are spirit filled the Spirit of God will prompt you so that you know what is coming say for instance, "evil spirit of seduction" if you don't identify it how do you know is a challenge to you.
But the emphasis should be Christ Jesus because at the mention of His name every name or demons shall bow.
Thank you.
I believe demons in addition to prayer and fasting are to be CAST OUT. (Mark 16:17) Jesus said, believer's shall CAST OUT DEMONS,in His Name. (Jn. 12:31) the prince of this world shall be CAST OUT. By whom? Jesus said, if I CAST OUT demons by the finger of God, that is proof that the Kingdom of God is here. (Lk. 11:20)
Jesus further said, that the Kingdom of God is within you. Why don't we prove it by casting out the demons in our areas of habitation, where we are trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord. Some of your comments hint at being inspired by a demon, why not with prayer and fasting, CAST THEM OUT! More @ www.crossofchristministries.org

One other thing, when casting out demons or evil spirits, rather than naming them, CAST OUT any and all evil spirits contributing to the manifesting oppression, for example, I CAST OUT every evil spirit contributing to depression or despair and in the Name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth I command you to go now.

I hate to say it but I am tired of the nuts, fruits and flakes tainting the real picture of the church. I love pastor Tim's comment he hit the nail on the head. There is a saying "Keep the main thing the main thing."
I suggest that before one starts out on an adventure in casting out demons check your relationship with Christ and do a biblical study on the topic. This is not a game to play, it is not the new way to gain popularity in your church, or the way to make money selling the next how to book for Christians. This is serious business and should not to be taken lightly. Study the Word of God the entire passage of scripture or, better yet the whole book but, I would caution the use of commentaries. Ask the Lord Jesus to give you discernment and wisdom. Remember that not everyone who writes these books have pure motives.
As for the Mark 16 reference it does make the point but, I find it interesting that the same scripture states that "they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them"(NIV) I am not sure anyone is ready for that yet. Hummmm!! That reminds me of the story Wendy Bagwell told about ministering at a church where they handle snakes. It seems they had pictures of people in their caskets in the vestibule. According to Wendy the preacher of the church said that those were the people who lost their faith. If you have not heard this one it is worth a google search.
Yes, Jesus did cast out demons but there is no reference to the people being believers before the fact. As a matter of fact they believed after being touched by the master.
The nondenominational "Word of Faith Ministries" is a denomination. If you don't believe me just check out the television evangelists who are well known by charismatics world wide. They all have this name listed either in their magazines, in their telecasts and radio programs. As with ANY person or group only God knows their hearts.
One last thought...You do not need a book or prayers or special instructions to communicate with our Father. Just speak to him (out loud, softly, in writing, in your prayer closet, in your mind, well anywhere anytime, HE IS WAITING FOR YOU AND IS LISTENING FOR YOUR VOICE. REMEMBER AN OUNCE OF PREVENTION IS WORTH A POUND OF CURE. READ EPHESIANS 6:5-18
From my background with deliverance leadership, it strikes me that effectiveness in a deliverance session is on a sliding scale determined by a combination of variables, stemming from either party.
The measure of faith (and it's purity at that moment in time) would seem to have a significant bearing on demonic obedience from the ministering perspective.
My pastor was H. Maxwell White, considered to be the God Father of the deliverance Ministry in the Florida area in the 60s'& up to the early 70s'.He would frequently ask them questions (the demons)commanding only truth to come from their mouths "In the name of Jesus" -later on in his ministry he saw that it could be counter productive to do so.As he put it, "They craved the spotlight and wasted my time!" Receiving a word of knowledge is pretty straight forward, but it's warfare when you involve these entities because they know if the power of the Spirit is impeded by a blockage in our Spiritual arteries and lack of confidence impedes the path of faith. The more we talk with them, the greater chance of compromise because of our carnal tenancies.
There is still much more the Lord will be revealing to us about our adversary as the next wave becomes evident. One thing we all can know with certainty is that the closer to vine the sweeter the fruit!
And that we all need to be awakened to know Him in a deeper way.
I really hope you do that research on how to cast out demons and where to send them. I believe that if a Christian is going to participate in deliverance activities, he or she must know the correct way to handle each situation.
